Paladins Edge Bears, 11-10
3/25/2017 3:19:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
GREENVILLE, S.C. – It was a close game from start to finish, but Mercer was unable to survive another close call as the Bears fell to the Paladins, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon. Eight Bears scored in the game, but Mercer's well-rounded offense wasn't enough to sustain the Bears in the end.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a slow start from both teams, Lucas Wittenberg scored first to give Mercer a 1-0 lead, which it held on to for six minutes. In the final two minutes of the first period, Furman scored twice and Mercer scored once as the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of 15 minutes of play. Furman took a 3-2 lead to start the second period, but a pair of Mercer goals put the Bears up 4-3 with 6:39 left until halftime. The Paladins scored three goals in 76 seconds to take a 6-4 lead late in the half, but Mercer added a pair of goals in under two minutes, including one with just six seconds on the clock, to once again tie the game, 6-6, heading into halftime.
Â
The teams traded goals in the third quarter, each adding two and moving the score to 8-8 entering the final period. The Paladins scored in the first minute of the quarter to take their final lead of the game and added a second goal to go up 10-8 with 12:11 to play. Jake Sadd scored less than a minute later for Mercer to cut Furman's lead back to one, 10-9. Another goal for each team with less than five minutes to play moved the score to 11-10 and after its final goal of the game, Mercer was unable to get another shot at tying it up and sending the game to overtime.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Kevin Yoggy tied his season high of two goals and also grabbed a ground ball for the Bears.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer went 2-for-3 on extra-man opportunities and held Furman to 0-of-3.
