MACON, Ga. – Mercer allowed four runs in the first inning and the Bears rally fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Chattanooga Saturday in both teams' Southern Conference opener.

Mercer (14-20, 0-1 Southern) rallied back from the early four-run deficit to pull within one after the fifth inning. The Bears threatened in the sixth as Meghan Rud reached on a walk then advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases. But she was stranded after Taylor Miller struck out looking.

Chattanooga (10-20, 1-0), which had lost two of the last three against Mercer going into the game, took advantage of two Mercer errors in the game.

Megan Lane was 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. That included her RBI double in the third inning that scored Mercer's first run of the game.
