No Joke: Bilgri Throws Complete Game Shutout of ETSU
4/1/2017 3:29:00 PM | Softball
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Megan Bilgri tied a career-high six strikeouts and threw a complete game shutout as Mercer blanked ETSU, 2-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at Betty Basler Field Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Bears (17-20, 3-1 Southern) scored a single run in back-to-back innings early on and held on for the win. ETSU (14-17, 0-1) only truly threatened to score once but was thwarted as Mykeah Johnson was thrown out in a rundown between third and home in the third inning. The Bucs would not put a runner in scoring position after that and would only have two base runners over the final four innings.
Â
Bilgri (7-4) shined in the circle as she fanned six and walked two in a complete game shutout performance. Meghan Rud and Caroline Taylor were both 2-for-3 with a run scored with each ripping a double.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Rud and Taylor were impressive at the plate and Rud's tenacity on the base paths – she had a stolen base and survived a physical play at the plate to score her run – was noteworthy but a complete game shutout wins over all. Megan Bilgri allowed only four hits and struck out six, matching a career best mark, in notching her seventh win of the season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer registered three extra-base hits in the game while ETSU failed to get one. Meghan Rud, Caroline Taylor and Maxine Rodriguez all smashed doubles in the contest.
