Bears Drop 10-Inning Thriller at Furman, 3-2
4/15/2017 1:49:00 PM | Softball
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer had eight different players record a hit but the Bears fell prey to a two-out rally by the host Paladins in a 10-inning, 3-2 loss at Furman in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday morning.
Â
Trailing 2-1, the game was sent into extra innings after Quirisa Mauga drew a bases loaded hit by pitch to tie the game. But the Bears wouldn't be able to score again in the frame and, after holding Furman hitless in the final inning, the game went to extra innings.
Â
With neither team scoring until the 10th, the international tiebreaker was implemented. Taylor Rodgers regained the lead for Mercer (19-26, 5-6 Southern) with a sacrifice fly but Furman would rally back. A sacrifice bunt, followed by two errors, pushed a run across to tie the game before Lindsey Bert sliced a single through the right side to drive in the winning run for Furman (23-16, 7-1). Â
Â
Megan Bilgri (8-7) was charged with the loss after allowing two unearned runs in 2.2 innings in relief. She replaced Stella Preston, who impressed after striking out five and only walking two in matching a career-long 7.0 innings in the circle.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Taylor Rodgers entered the lineup in the sixth inning and went 1-for-2 in the game with an RBI.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Furman sent multiple pinch hitters to the plate late in the game in an attempt to break the tie but Stella Preston forced the Paladins pinch hitters into a .000 performance at the plate, failing to reach a base.
