Bellarmine Rallies For Second Half Comeback Over Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Mercer led by five early in the second half, but Bellarmine used a big fourth quarter to come back and edge the Bears, 12-11, in the final home game of the season.
The Bears were dominant in the first half and even more so in the second quarter but began to lose steam late in the game, allowing the Knights to capitalize.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded goals at the beginning of the first quarter, tying the game 2-2 with 7:51 remaining in the period. Neither team scored for the remainder of the quarter, but Mercer opened up in the second period. Kevin Yoggy scored less than a minute into the quarter and Bellarmine answered with a goal a few minutes later to tie the game, 3-3. Chris Rahill scored six seconds later to put Mercer back up, 4-3, and spark a 4-0 run to close out the half and stretch the Bears' lead to 7-3. Rahill scored all three of his goals in the second quarter and Lucas Wittenberg added the fourth goal of the run.
Jake Nelson started the second half with a goal and gave Mercer its' largest lead of the game, 8-3, with 13:09 left in the third period. The Knights responded with three unanswered goals to cut the Bears' lead to 8-6. Bryan Gibson and Scott Baird each found the back of the net to put Mercer back up 10-6, but Bellarmine scored with three seconds left in the quarter and then added three more goals at the start of the fourth quarter to tie the game, 10-10, with 7:02 on the clock. Yoggy helped Mercer retake the lead, 11-10, with an unassisted goal, but the Knights added a goal of their own eight seconds later to knot the score once again. With 1:26 to play, Bellarmine took its first lead of the game, 12-11, and managed to hold on to the lead as time ran out.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Kevin Yoggy tied his career highs of four points and two assists, while tying his season high of two goals. Yoggy led Mercer with four points on the day.

After a less than stellar faceoff performance against Jacksonville, Mercer bounced back and won the faceoff 15-of-24 times, including a 9-of-12 margin in the first half.
