Mercer Falters in Second Half, Loses to No. 14 Richmond
4/8/2017 4:14:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The third quarter was the determining factor on Saturday in Richmond as the Bears fell to the No. 14 Spiders, 12-9. Mercer lead 7-6 after the first half, but a 4-0 third quarter for Richmond made it difficult for the Bears to regain the momentum and rally for the second-straight game.
Â
Freshman Michael Quinn led Mercer with a career-high three points off a career-high two goals and an assist. Fellow freshman Bradley Hodoval had a 52.0 save percentage against the potent Richmond offense and helped keep the Spiders from controlling the score early on.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Richmond scored first, but Kevin Yoggy put Mercer on the board with 12:12 left in the first quarter before Jake Nelson added a goal 61 seconds later as the Bears took a 2-1 lead. The Spiders tied it up, 2-2, but another goal from Nelson with less than two minutes left in the quarter gave the Bears a 3-2 advantage. Chris Rahill put Mercer up two, 4-2, early in the second period but Richmond countered with three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead. Scott Baird scored with 7:18 on the clock and then turned around and assisted Matt Quinn on a goal as the Bears went back up, 6-5, with 6:07 remaining in the half. Another goal from each team saw Mercer lead 7-6 at the break.
Â
The Spiders' productive third quarter made it difficult for the Bears late in the game. Richmond scored four unanswered goals in the third period as the Spiders took their largest lead of the game, 10-7, at the end of 45 minutes of play. Richmond added another goal early in the fourth quarter before Mercer freshmen Michael Quinn and Will McCarthy scored back-to-back goals to cut Richmond's lead to 11-9 with 7:30 to play. The Bears were unable to score again and complete the rally as the Spiders added one last goal to move the final score to 12-9.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Michael Quinn had career-highs of three points and two goals to help lead Mercer's offense. His fourth quarter goal also stopped Richmond's second-half, 5-0, run.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer was 2-of-2 on man-down defense and also went 1-of-1 on its own man-up opportunity.
