Bears Deal UNCG First SoCon Loss, 6-2
4/8/2017 4:29:00 PM | Softball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer had four players with multiple hits and took advantage of three UNCG errors as the Bears handed the Spartans their first Southern Conference loss of the season with a 6-2 decision Saturday at Sikes Field.
Â
Meghan Rud, Taylor Miller, Caroline Taylor and Emma Andrew all were 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored as Mercer ended a two-game losing streak to the Spartans in the all-time series. UNCG (20-15, 3-1 Southern), which had entered the weekend with an unblemished record in league play, fell in their first game played in 10 days.
Â
Mercer (18-22, 4-3) rebounded after dropping last weekend's series at ETSU. The Bears have now won three straight home games.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Stella Preston gets the nod as her three innings in relief in the circle were masterful. Preston faced 10 batters – just one over the minimum – as she struck out two and allowed only one hit. Additionally, she qualified for her fourth save, a mark that leads the Southern Conference and ranks tied for third nationally.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The 10 hits Mercer accumulated are the most in a conference game so far this year and marks the 11th time the Bears have recorded double-digit hits.
