Mercer Edged in Extras in SoCon Semifinals
5/12/2017 1:34:00 PM | Softball
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Quirisa Mauga was an impressive 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs and made a career-high seven putouts but the fifth-seeded Bears fell, 4-3, in nine innings to No. 3 ETSU in a semifinal match-up in the double-elimination Southern Conference Tournament.
Â
Mauga was responsible for all three of Mercer's runs with her two-run home run after scoring on an Emma Andrew sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Â
Mercer (26-30) will now face the winner of No. 1 UNCG and No. 4 Samford in an elimination game for the right to advance to the tournament championship game.
Â
ETSU (28-24) held a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Mauga tied it up with one swing, sending a shot over the left-center field fence. The home run, Mauga's eighth of the year, extended her SoCon lead in RBIs and would eventually send the game into extra innings.
Â
Facing two outs in the top of the ninth, ETSU's Kylie Toler drew a walk and then would be driven home as Malloree Schurr hit a double off the centerfield wall to score the eventual winning run.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Quirisa Mauga easily gets the nod for her career performance in the game. A junior, Mauga was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs as she blasted a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning. She was also a stalwart defensive presence with seven putouts – including a diving catch behind the circle – with one assist. Mauga's home run – her eighth of the season – extended her Southern Conference lead with 44 RBIs this year.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's run scored in the second inning marked the first run allowed by ETSU in the 2017 Southern Conference Tournament. The Bucs had entered the game allowing zero runs in games against Western Carolina and Chattanooga. Additionally, the first run by the Bears ended Madison Ogle's streak of 8.2 innings pitched without allowing a run
