Bears Best Georgia Southern 5-2 Tuesday Afternoon

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team stretched to a three-match winning streak with a 5-2 triumph over Georgia Southern Tuesday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.

The Bears handed the Eagles their first home loss since losing to Appalachian State on April 16, 2016. Mercer is now 4-23 against Georgia Southern with all four wins coming in the last five seasons.

The afternoon began with Mercer taking the doubles competition to jump to an early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 duo of Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart turned in the first result of the day with a 6-4 win over Stefano Di Aloy and Diego Finkelstein. The Bears No. 2 pairing of Nico Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Artemie Amari and Eddi Landin.

Georgia Southern evened the match when their No. 3 seeded Landin defeated Guillon 7-5, 6-2. On court No. 2, Stuart downed Finkelstein in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. The Eagles knotted the match up at 2-2 when Mercer's No. 6 seeded Carver Arant fell to Pascal Waymaker, 7-6, 7-5. The Bears picked up some momentum as they once again regained the lead with No. 4 Fernando Guardia topping Santiago Suarez, 7-6, 6-4. Court No. 5 saw Mercer's Stathis Tsiranidis best Murphy McCullough in a thrilling three-setter, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Mercer earned yet another victory as Philp rallied to defeat Di Aloy on court No. 1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

With the win, Mercer improves to 3-1 on the season while Georgia Southern falls to 0-1.

The Bears will continue their road swing as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State on Sunday, Jan. 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
