
Bears Conclude Road Swing with 5-2 Victory Over Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Mercer men's tennis team stretched to a four-match winning streak with a 5-2 defeat over Alabama State Friday afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

The Bears fell behind early, losing the doubles competition. On court No. 1, Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart dropped a 6-4 decision to Ion Efrim and Alexis Collard. Court No. 2 saw Nicolas Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen best Andrej Trajkovski and Alejo Calvis, 6-3. Alabama State clinched the doubles point when No. 3 seeded Carl-Louis Luckmann and Tomas Fernandez defeated Stathis Tsiranidis and Carver Arant, 7-6 (3).

Mercer evened the match at 1-1 when No. 4 Fernando Guardia topped Luckmann 6-2, 6-0. On court No. 2, Stuart claimed the lead for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Collard. Court No. 6 saw Vanoppen downed Trajkovski, 6-3, 6-0. Mercer continued to pick up some momentum as No. 3 Guillon defeated Fernandez, 6-0, 6-4. The match was clinched when No. 5 seeded Tsiranidis won a thrilling 7-6 (6), 3-6, 10-3, super tiebreak over Calvis. On court No. 1, Philp fell to Efrim, 6-3, 3-6, 10-1.

The Bears will return to Macon for a three-match home-stand beginning with hosting Kennesaw State on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
