Philp Shines in Mercer’s 4-3 Win Over Kennesaw State Tuesday

MACON, Ga. – Sam Philp clinched the match in a second set tiebreak to help the Bears see a 4-3 win over Kennesaw State Owls Tuesday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

The afternoon began with the Bears falling behind as Kennesaw State claimed the doubles competition. The No. 1 duo of Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart fell 6-2 to Fermin Calvo Barcelo and Lucas De Tores Curth. The Owls clinched the doubles point when their No. 3 pairing of Drew Lahey and Bryan Triana beat Stathis Tsiranidis and Carver Arant, 6-4. Play was left unfinished on court No. 2.

The Bears' No. 2 Stuart topped Curth in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Court No. 3 saw Guillon fall 6-4, 6-2, to Smith. On court No. 4, the Bears Fernando Guardia bested Triana 6-2, 7-5. The No. 5 seeded Drew Lahey of Kennesaw State saw a 6-3, 6-3, success over Tsiranidis. Mercer's No. 6 Ruben Vanoppen downed Harrison Wood, 6-4, 6-2. With the match tied at 3-3, all eyes were on court No. 1 for the match clincher. Philp, who was named SoCon Player of the Week earlier in the day, lifted the squad to victory with a 7-5, 7-6, triumph over Barcelo.

The Bears will continue their home-stand, facing Georgia Southwestern State Saturday, Feb. 17, beginning at 11 a.m.
