Bears Hyped for Battle with the Bulldogs in SoCon Clash

MACON, Ga. – Mercer softball will shift its focus back to Southern Conference action this weekend as the Bears welcome SoCon foe Samford into town for a three-game series. The three-game tilt will commence tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Mercer added a stamp to an already impressive season this week after receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll. Both appearances are a first in Mercer history, just a few days after the Bears pulled off arguably the most impressive win in school history, defeating No. 5 Georgia by the final score of 5-2 in Athens, Ga.

Down the Stretch
With just nine regular season games left, all SoCon contests, the Bears have their sights on the first-place conference finish. Mercer holds a 7-1 conference record and is nipping at the heels of the Spartans who are holding a 9-1 SoCon mark. Both squads split a two-game series earlier in the season.

Bashing the Bulldogs
Samford enters the weekend with an overall record of 15-31, including 3-4 in conference action. This is the second consecutive season that Samford will have failed to finish above .500. The Bulldogs are led by 2018 SoCon Co-Preseason Player of the Year, Shelby Maze. Maze is batting .421 on the season with five extra-base hits, nine RBIs and 16 stolen bases. In the circle, Samford has been less than stellar, posting a team ERA of 5.18, surrendering over eight hits per game. McKenna Gillespie is leading the squad in ERA (4.02), while posting a record of 3-7.

Series History

The Bears are 30-40-1 all-time against Samford, including 6-9 since the arrival of Coach DeFeo. Mercer is 8-15 in games played at Sikes Field against the Bulldogs. Samford has walked away victorious in seven of the last nine contests between the two squads and is 8-5 against Mercer since the Bears began SoCon play in 2015.
