
Bears Close out Regular Season with Furman on Senior Weekend

MACON, Ga. – Mercer softball will conclude its 2018 regular season this weekend with a three-game series against the Furman Paladins beginning with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Sunday's contest serving as Senior Day for six Mercer student-athletes.

Pound the Paladins
The Paladins are 36-12 on the season, inÂcluding 8-5 in SoCon play. Furman is third in the SoCon standings, trailing Mercer by two games and leading Chattanooga by 1.5 games. Furman is led in batting by AnnRose Borrelli with a .307 average and 12 homers. The key to Furman's success has been go-to pitcher Lindsey Bert with a 23-8 overall record and a 1.59 ERA. Bert leads the nation in strikeouts (293) and has thrown 124.2 more innings than FurÂman's No. 2 (Emily DeMonte).

With three regular season games remainÂing, both squads have a lot to play for. The Bears trail UNCG by one game and need to register one more win than the SparÂtans this week to take the top slot, needÂing some help from the Bulldogs of SamÂford. Furman trails Mercer by two games and leads Chattanooga by 1.5 games and can finish anywhere between second and fifth place in the conference standings.

Super Seniors
The Bears will graduate six seniors this weekend in: Emma Andrew, Megan BilÂgri, Quirisa Mauga, Jill McElderry, Meghan Rud and Caroline Taylor. This senior class contains the first student-athletes in MerÂcer Softball history to play all four years as SoCon members. The six seniors have acÂcumulated a record of 117-103 at Mercer, including two 30-win seasons. The four position players have registered a comÂbined .288 career batting average and are ranked in 17 offensive statistical categoÂries. Rud is currently first in career walks (96), second in at bats (717), runs (164), triples (11) and third in hits (248). Taylor is currently second in long balls (44) and runs batted in (147).
