Mercer defeats Furman, 4-3, in overtime

MACON, Ga. – With the match tied at 3-3, the Mercer men's soccer team scored the game-winning goal in the 94^th minute to defeat Furman, 4-3. Michael Ille scored the winning goal for the Bears, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Furman took an early 2-0 lead over Mercer as Rocky Guerra scored both goals for the Paladins. Mercer continued to battle and after the Bears drew a foul in the box, in the 43^rd minute, Dawson Gideon took the PK and scored trimming the lead to 2-1, going into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Mercer tied the goal in the 47^th minute when Gideon scored his second goal of the match. Jason Nduese-udom and Dylan Gaither picked up assists for the Bears. With the match tied at 2-2, Ricardo Packer Jr. came off the bench and scored the third goal of the game for the Bears. Bryant Jackson found Packer Jr. streaking down the right-hand side of the field; Packer got the ball and dibbled in and beat the goalie putting the Bears ahead, 3-2.

Over the next 15 minutes, the game remained in favor of the Bears. After the Bears were called for a foul, the Paladins took the free kick and Cole McLagan scored tying the game and forcing overtime.

In the 94^th minute of the contest, Liam Coxhead threw the ball in and Packer Jr. sent a pass into Ille who beat the goalie for a goal for the Bears giving the Bears a 4-3 overtime victory.

NOTABLES

Mercer trailed 2-0 early in the contest before bouncing back to earn the victory.
Three different Bears scored in the match, led by Dawson Gideon who scored two goals.
Michael Ille scored the game-winning goal for the Bears.
The win for Mercer snapped a two-game losing streak.
With the overtime win, the Bears improve to 2-4 in overtime matches this season.
Mercer outshot the Paladins 16-13 in the match.

UP NEXT
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face UNCG. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
