Lynn Gardner tosses third complete game of season
MACON, Ga. – Freshman pitcher Lynn Gardner went the distance to lead Mercer to a 5-4 win over in-state foe Georgia Southern on Wednesday at Sikes Field.
Â
The Bears improved to 3-3 overall with the mid-week victory. Gardner (3-0) has been the pitcher of record in all three of Mercer's wins so far this season. Georgia Southern fell to 4-3. Fielding miscues for both teams played a key role in the outcome of the game, as each team committed three errors apiece.
Â
Despite owning the lead through four innings, Mercer found itself trailing, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth after a three-run home run by the Eagles' Shelby Wilson. The long ball came two at bats after an error in right field, which extended the top of the fifth. However, the Bears would catch a break in the home half of the fifth as a dropped fly ball in left field allowed Allie Jones and Kenlie Harvey to score and regain the lead, 4-3. Jones walked to start the inning and was followed by a double from Harvey before both scored.
Â
Megan Lane would later drive home Shaila Warren – who reached on the error in left field – with an RBI single to make it a two-run game.
Â
Gardner, who limited the Eagles to just six hits on the day, found herself in trouble in the top of the seventh when she walked two of the first three batters she faced. An error at shortstop by the Bears led to an eventual unearned run on a fielder's choice. The freshman put an end to the Eagles' final chance at tying the game with her fifth strikeout of the game.
