Mercer opens Jaguar Challenge with pair of losses
MOBILE, Ala. – Mercer dropped a pair of games to Tulsa and Lipscomb during the opening day of the South Alabama-hosted Jaguar Challenge on Friday.
Â
Game 1: Tulsa 3, Mercer 2
Mercer dropped a 3-2 contest to Tulsa to open the day. A sacrifice fly by Megan Lane scored Catie Josselet in the bottom of the third inning and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. Josselet had led off the inning with a double and advanced into scoring position on a single by Micayla Rood.
Â
Tulsa tied the game the following inning on a RBI single. In the home half of the sixth, Mercer regained its lead, 2-1, when Laurenne Sanchez scored on a wild pitch. Sanchez had led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third.
Â
The Golden Hurricanes plated a pair on three hits in the top of the seventh, however, to beat the Bears. Bailey Pattison (0-3) took the loss despite pitching all seven innings; she struck out four batters and walked just one.
Â
Game 2: Lipscomb 6, Mercer 5 (8 innings)
The Bears squandered a 4-0 lead as Lipscomb scored six of the final seven runs scored in the contest. RBI doubles by Megan Lane and Allie Jones, as well as a sacrifice bunt RBI by Danielle Castleberry, earned Mercer a four-run advantage through 2.5 innings.
Â
Lipscomb cut its deficit in half with two runs in the third and later tied it up in the fifth. Three Mercer errors contributed to the Lipscomb rally. Lynn Gardner, who did not earn the decision, tossed 4.1 innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned. Lauren O'Dell, who threw the final three innings, relieved Gardner. Mercer regained its lead in the sixth when Allie Jones scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Lipscomb tied it up again in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single to force extra innings. A leadoff single by Lipscomb in the bottom of the eighth eventually led to the game-winning run, handing Mercer its second loss of the day.
