Mercer Drops Saturday Doubleheader in Alabama

Bears fall against South Alabama, North Dakota
Â
Game 1: South Alabama 12, Mercer 8
Mercer jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first with RBI singles by Danielle Castleberry and Allie Jones. The host Jaguars swiftly responded, however, with a pair of two-run home runs off Mercer starter Lynn Gardner (3-1), who took her first loss of the season in the circle. A two-run double by freshman Kenlie Harvey scored Walsh and Jones to regain the lead for Mercer in the top of the third.
Â
It was another short-lived lead for Mercer, as South Alabama plated six runs in the third to take a 10-5 advantage. The Bears would score three more in the top of the fifth on four walks and two hit-by-pitches, but it proved not enough to beat the host Jaguars. Lauren O'Dell and Sydney Tucker pitched in relief.
Â
Game 2: North Dakota 4, Mercer 2 (8 innings)
North Dakota scored all four of its runs over the final three innings as Mercer gave up an early two-run lead in the Saturday nightcap in Mobile. A sacrifice fly by Shaila Warren and a RBI groundout by Tori Ash gave Mercer a 2-0 advantage in the second inning. The Bears' bats were stifled the rest of the way though, registering only five hits in eight innings to support starting pitcher Bailey Pattison, who tossed all eight innings.
Â
North Dakota plated one run in both the sixth and seventh frames to tie the game and force extra innings. A home run by Angel Love in the top of the eighth would prove to be the game-winning run. Mercer put the tying run on second base after Castleberry singled, but she was left stranded. Pattison struck out seven batters and issued just one walk in the loss.
