Mercer honored four seniors before Sunday’s game
MACON, Ga. – UNCG completed a three-game sweep of Mercer with an 8-4 win at Sikes Field in the Southern Conference series finale Sunday afternoon as the Bears celebrated Senior Day.
Â
The big blow from UNCG (28-19, 10-4 SoCon) came in the top of the fourth inning, when the Spartans put up five runs on just two hits in the frame – highlighted by a three-run homer from Kamryn Graves. Stephanie Bryden (20-10) earned the win in the circle and helped herself out with a two-RBI double in that five-run fourth.
Â
Mercer (22-27, 7-7 SoCon) took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second, coming on a two-out, RBI single from Laurenne Sanchez. The frame got started with senior Shaila Warren's first base hit of the afternoon, who then stole second to get in scoring position for Sanchez.
Â
The Bears then battled back within striking distance in the bottom of the fourth on Sanchez's second and third RBIs of the game, this time on a triple off the right field wall. They then pulled closer with a Warren solo shot in the sixth – her third hit of the day. However, the Spartans put things out of reach with a three-spot final inning.
Â
Wearing the loss for the Bears was Bailey Pattison (10-9), who stranded eight Spartan baserunners in the first three innings of the ballgame but allowed four runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work.
