Mercer Falls in SoCon Tournament Opener

The Bears will play an elimination game Thursday at 8 p.m.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A four-run top of the fifth gave fifth-seeded ETSU a comfortable advantage on its way to downing Mercer, 5-1, in the opening contest of the 2019 Southern Conference Championship at Jim Frost Stadium Wednesday morning.

That fifth inning featured two, two-run homers for the Bucs (21-25-2) off the bats of Julia Fritz and Taylor Wright. Wright finished the game 2-for-3 with the two RBI and a walk to pace ETSU at the plate.

The Bears (25-28) struck first on an RBI triple from Megan Lane in the second inning but were unable to strike for any more runs the remainder of the game. Lane led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, adding a single later in the game.

Taylor Boling (8-11) picked up the win for ETSU in the contest after giving up just one run on six hits without walking a batter in a complete-game outing.

Stella Preston got the start in the circle for Mercer and was effective through four innings of work – giving up just one run and scattering three hits around four strikeouts. Lynn Gardner (9-11) wore the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits in three innings.

» Senior Megan Lane recorded her fourth consecutive multi-hit game after a second-inning triple and a fourth-inning single. She now has nine hits over that four-game span.
» The loss marked Mercer's first to ETSU since the Bucs defeated the Bears in the 2017 SoCon Tournament, also located in Chattanooga.
» Mercer fell to 24-14 all-time against ETSU
