Mercer will be back in action on Friday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Mercer men's tennis team opened its spring season against Florida State but dropped the match, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon.
After dropping the first doubles match of the day, Andrew Branicki and Samuel Macleod defeated Richard Thongoana and Chase Wood, 6-3. With each team winning a doubles match, the doubles point would come down to No. 1 doubles. Hugo Lobo and Lucas Wayenburg were matched up against Loris Pourroy and Marcus Walters. With the set tied 5-5, it was either team's match to win. However, Florida State's squad took the next two sets, and FSU claimed the doubles point.
Wayenburg battled in No. 2 singles for the Bears. After dropping the first set, 7-6, to Thongoana, Wayenburg answered back in the second set. Wayenburg took the second set, 6-4, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth tiebreaker, Wayenburg and Thongoana were tied at 9-9 in the win by two tiebreaker. However, Thongoana took the final two points to defeat Wayenburg.
