
Men’s Tennis Wins SoCon Opener Over Wofford

Mercer defeated Wofford, 4-3, to open SoCon play
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Mercer men's tennis team opened Southern Conference play with a hard fought 4-3 victory over Wofford on Saturday afternoon, halting Wofford's three-match winning streak.
In a match that went three and a half hours, the Bears needed a rally in doubles to start play. After dropping No. 2 doubles, Michael Durham and Samuel Barrow won 6-2, tying the double matches at 1-1. The doubles point came down to No. 1 doubles. Hugo Lobo and Lucas Wayenburg had a huge 7-6 win to give Mercer the doubles point.
The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 early in singles play. Carver Arant took set one, 6-2, in No. 3 singles against Ashe Ray. Arant came back and took the second set 6-1.
After the next two matches finished, the Bears found themselves tied at 2-2 as Wofford took No. 5 and 6 singles to tie the match.
David Georgadze put the Bears back on top with a win in No. 4 singles. Georgadze took a tight first set, 7-6, before taking set two, 6-3, which put Mercer ahead, 3-2.
The final two matches, No. 1 and No. 2 singles both went to a third set. In No. 1 singles, Lobo, won the first set over Omar Williams, 6-2. However, Williams responded by taking the next two sets and tying the match at 3-3.
The match came down to No. 2 singles where Lucas Wayenburg took on Callum Rendle. Wayenburg took the first set 6-4. Rendle responded back with a 7-5 win in set two. The match would come down to the third set. The third set was a tight battle, but Wayenburg came out on top, 7-5, giving the Bears the match.
