Mercer waits to see who they will face in SoCon Tournament
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center with a 6-1 loss.
The Bears battled but fell short in all three doubles matches to open play. After falling 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, the duo of Danny Flynn and Michael Durham battled but dropped a 6-4 match at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles team of Lucas Wayenburg and Hugo Lobo took on the 33rd-ranked squad of Victor Chaw and Jim Hendrikx on court one and lost, 6-4.
In singles, the Bears fell behind early as Lucas Wayenburg was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in the second flight. Mercer found itself behind 3-0 after losing at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Mercer continued to battle and had first set wins in the remainder of the matches. Lobo clinched the first win and point for the Bears in the No. 1 singles position. Lobo defeated Roosouw Norval, 7-6, 6-2.
The Bears needed to win the final three matches to win the match. After winning his first set, 6-2, David Georgadze lost the second set to Jim Hendrikx, 6-3. In the third set, Hendrikx came away with a win. Like Georgadze, Michael Durham won his first set, 6-4. His opponent, Tomas Santantonio, won the next set forcing a third set. In the third set Santantonio won. Danny Flynn also won his first set, 6-4. Like the previous two matches, Flynn lost the second and third sets.
