Mercer Rallies For 3-2 Win To Stay Undefeated
Blacksburg, Va.—The Mercer Bears men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a come from behind 3-2 road win over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears (2-0-2 overall, 0-0-0 SoCon) struck first as Dylan Gaither scored his second goal of the season. Virginia Tech (0-3-0-1 overall, 0-0-0 ACC) goalkeeper Ben Martino was outside the 18-yard penalty area box and cleared the ball to midfield. Gaither took control and just crossing the midfield stripe launched a shot that sailed into the Hokies' net landing into the bottom right corner, well before Martino could retreat to his net.
The Hokies drew even when Danny Flores scored on a penalty kick after a hand ball call in the penalty area against the Bears. Mercer goalkeeper Trevor McMullen dove and got a piece of the ball, but it just eluded him into the lower right corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Meisei Yoshizawa gave Virginia Tech the lead in the 29th minute. He corralled the ball at the top right corner of the 18-yard box, worked his way through traffic and as he reached the intersection of the penalty arc, let a left footed shot go, which rolled along the ground just out of McMullen's reach inside the left post.
Michael Ille got the Bears even in the 63rd minute. He got control on the left side of the Hokie's six-yard box and his left-foot shot got between Martino and the near goal post for his first goal of the season.
Mercer reclaimed the lead at 3-2 as Kadeem Agard slid to a pass from Fernando Arteaga, and deflected it into the net, just before it was headed wide. It was Agard's second goal of the season.
