Bears To Compete In The Hatter Classic

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team stays on the road to Stetson University this weekend for the Hatter Classic. The tournament will host the Bears alongside Monmouth University and Fairfield University.
"We are still working hard to find the right combinations offensively and defensively," said head coach Fico. "Playing 5 games this weekend will provide numerous opportunities for adjustments throughout the lineup. We anticipated this being a challenge early in the season with as many new faces as we have to our roster."

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Monmouth University
Monmouth is 0-2 on the season after facing Siena this past weekend. This will be the second all-time meeting with the Bears. Their first meeting was back in 2020 when the Bears won 4-1 on the road. Mercer will have to watch out for sophomore pitcher Billie Kerwood who recorded 11 strikeouts in the 7.2 innings pitched.Â
Stetson University
    The Stetson Hatters are split at three on the season after picking up two wins from Providence and one from Dayton at the Frank Griffin Classic. The Hatters finished 21-34 last season and advanced to the 2022 ASUN Softball Championship as the No. 7 seed. This will be the 76th match-up between the two squads with the first being in 1986.Â
Fairfield University
    This will be the opening weekend for Fairfield with their first game being against Monmouth. The Stags were selected third in the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Mercer will have to watch out for outfielder Charli Warren who was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
