Mercer Picks Up A Win At Hatter Classic

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team split the first day at the Stetson Classic picking up a win from Monmouth University (2-0) and a loss from Stetson University (2-3).

How It Happened
GAME ONE, vs Monmouth University
    Monmouth started strong with a double down the first baseline but did not pull through and left one base. They continued this pace with a three up and three down for the Bears. In the second Mercer recorded no hits and was able to stop Monmouth with two runners on base. The third brought the first run of the game after a great hit from Lillian Wilkerson. A single from Rebeca Laudino brought home Alyssa Woods for another run. Mercer finished the inning with two hits, two runs, and three left stranded.
    Katie Rearley picked up two strikeouts to end the third and the Bears recorded a three up and three down in the fourth. The fifth and the sixth brought no hits or runs from either team. Monmouth looked to pick up momentum in the seventh but left three on base with no runs. Mercer took their second win of the season, 2-0.

GAME TWO, vs Stetson Unviersity
    The Bears started the game with a walk for Alyssa Woods but were quickly stopped by the Stetson defense that allowed no hits. Stetson picked up two hits in the bottom of the first but was caught by two field outs and a strikeout from Grace Taylor. The Hatters kept the same defensive pace with a three up and three down with the Bears returning the favor in the bottom of the second. The Mercer defense could not slow down the runners and Stetson would pick up two hits and one run in the third. They were closed out by a gorgeous double play from Bailey Ledvina and Tori Hedgecock.
    Both teams had a three up and three down in the fourth inning. Madi Wicker walked to start the fifth and eventually scored due to an RBI from Hedgecock. The Bears finished the inning out with one runner left on base. Stetson recorded three hits and another run to take the lead.
    Bears had a three up three down inning to end the top of the sixth. Mercer allowed Stetson to pick up one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Mercer's lead runner got on in the top of the seventh, but they were unable to advance the runner. Stetson took the game 3-1.

Up Next
The Bears will enter their second day at the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University. Mercer's first game of the day will be against Monmouth University at 9:30 a.m.
