Bears Battle the Spiders

RICHMOND, Va. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team lost a hard fought game against Richmond 11-6 on Tuesday evening at Robins Field in Richmond, Virginia. The Bears move to 1-5 on the season. Richmond moves to 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Five different Bears contributed to the scoring on the evening. Freshman Jack Sullivan and freshman Michael Frederick each scored once. Senior defensive midfielder Dean Draughn scored his first goal of his collegiate career. Senior midfielder Khory Reid scored twice, and senior Wesley Chairs would score a three-quarter field goal in the third quarter.
Jack Sullivan would begin the scoring in the first quarter. Senior attackman Parker Junod was dodging from the wing when he saw a cutting Sullivan from behind the goal who caught the pass and scored. Richmond would score four goals until the Bears scored again. The second Mercer goal came from Dean Draughn off an assist from freshmen Thomas Strong in the final two seconds of the first quarter. This goal would be Draughn's first collegiate goal. The score going into the second quarter was a 4-2 lead for the Spiders.
The second quarter would start with a Spider's goal. The Bears would bounce back though with two quick goals. The first would come from Khory Reid off an assist from Thomas Strong. The second would come from a ten-yard step down from Michael Frederick off a Taylor Dooley assist. The Spiders would score two more making the score 4-7 heading into the half.
Richmond would score three goals to start the half. Mercer's first goal of the half would come from Wesley Chairs. Chairs would catch Richmond in a ten-man ride and would find the back from behind the defensive restraining line. This would be Chairs' first goal as a Bear. After Chairs' goal, the third quarter would be a defensive battle for both teams. The score heading into the fourth was 9-5 in favor of the Spiders.
The Spiders would open the quarter up with two goals. This would be there final two goals of the game. The Bears final goal would be an unassisted goal from Khory Reid. Reid dodged from the wing and found his way to the middle of the crease and would place it around the goalkeeper. The final score of the game was 11-6.
UP NEXT: The Bears will travel to Baltimore, Maryland to take on UMBC, Saturday, March 11th.
