Bears Travel For Midweek Matchup With Georgia Southern
2/20/2024 2:26:00 PM | Softball
MACON – The Mercer softball team will resume its 2024 schedule on Wednesday evening when the Bears pack up their show and make the trip to Statesboro for a rare midweek matchup against Georgia Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the GS Softball Complex.
Â
Fans unable to make the trip to Statesboro can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the GSU athletics department. The game will also be streamed live by ESPN+.
Â
Wednesday's action will mark the first for the Bears (4-1) since a mercy rule-abbreviated 10-2 win at Georgia State on February 14. The Orange & Black was set to compete in the JU/UNF Invitational over the weekend, but steady rain in the sunshine state put the kibosh on those plans.
Â
Mercer, which has tacked up double-digit hit attacks in three outings already this season, will lug NCAA Division I's 18th-best hitting team (.365) into Wednesday's tilt in Statesboro. The Bears are paced on offense by junior Tori Hedgecock who has registered a SoCon-best .545 (6-for-11) batting average through five games to go along with three homers and eight RBI. Kassidy Moore leads the nation with 0.80 home runs per game after logging a quartet of four-baggers already in 2024.

SERIES HISTORY |
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series with Mercer, 51-17, but the Bears snapped a four-game series skid with a 5-1 triumph in the second half of a twinbill in Statesboro on April 19 of last season. |
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS |
The Eagles (4-3) will ride a two-game skid into Wednesday's meeting after dropping games to both the College of Charleston and Florida at the rain-shortened UF Bubly Invitational on Friday. Georgia Southern is paced by sophomore outfielder Emma Davis who has tallied a .409 (9-for-22) hitting clip in seven starts to go along with two RBI and three runs scored. In the circle, GSU is led by a pair of pitchers with sub-2.00 earned run averages, including sophomore right-hander Bailey Holland who is 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA. |
UP NEXT FOR THE BEARS |
The Bears will play five games in the comfy confines of Sikes Field this weekend as part of the Mercer Bears Invitational. Mercer will open up its portion of round-robin tournament play on Friday with games against Troy (4 p.m.) and Morehead State (6:30 p.m.). |
