Bears Grind Out Win Over Wofford In SoCon Opener
3/18/2024 11:05:00 AM | Men's Tennis
MERCER – Marceau Fouilhoux won six-straight games, including the final two when the suspended contest resumed on Monday morning, to rally back from a 4-0 deficit in the third set and provide the match-clinching point in Mercer's 4-3 win over visiting Wofford at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The result gave the Bears (3-9, 1-0 SoCon) a triumph in their Southern Conference opener for the fourth time in the last five years, while also giving Mercer consecutive wins for the first time this season as well. It was the second-straight loss for the Terriers (6-7, 1-1) who eked out a win over The Citadel in their league opener two weeks ago.
The Orange & Black split decisions on court Nos. 2 and 3 in doubles play, before Wofford picked up the crucial doubles point via a 7-4 tiebreaker on court No. 1 to grab the early momentum. The Terriers stretched their lead on the team scoreboard out to 3-1 thanks to wins at both Nos. 5 and 6 singles, but that only set up a Mercer comeback worth noting.
Samuel Barrow finished off a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Robbie Young to notch another team point for the Bears, and Lucas Dini rebounded from an opening-set loss to Max Graham at No. 1 singles with a 6-3 win in the second set. Dini was up 5-0 in the third set when the match was suspended on Sunday due to heavy rain, but finished off his individual win quickly upon resumption on Monday.
Fouilhoux dropped his opening set with Ashe Ray at No. 2 singles, but rebounded with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Ray tacked up four-straight points to take control in the third set, but Fouilhoux gathered his wits and grabbed four-straight games to knot it back up on Sunday before play was suspended.
The Bears will be back in action again on Sunday when they play the first of two-straight road matches against SoCon rival UNC Greensboro (4-8, 0-4) at the UNCG Tennis Courts. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
