3/24/2024 5:08:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team yielded just 10 games in capturing all three doubles matches, then tacked up a quintet of singles matchups in straight sets, on the way to a 6-1 rout at UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon in central North Carolina.
The result marked the third consecutive triumph for the Bears (4-9, 2-0 SoCon) who will play the second of two-straight road matches on Tuesday against East Tennessee State. It was the sixth-straight loss for the Spartans (5-11, 0-6) who remained winless in league play.
Seniors Samuel MacLeod and Samuel Barrow made short work, 6-3, of UNCG's tandem of Hampus Johansson on John Gabelic at No. 3 doubles, and the Bears picked up the doubles point moments later on court No. 1 when seniors Lucas Dini and Andrew Branicki finished off a 6-3 triumph over David Flisberg and Christopher Johns.
Marceau Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic put a ribbon the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court No. 2 as well.
The Spartans knotted the team score up early in singles competition as Timofiy Khrystyuk registered a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles against Stefanovic, but it was all Orange & Black after that. MacLeod surrendered just four games in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Andrew Black at No. 5 singles, Fouilhoux followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles and Dini clinched the team win for MU on a 6-4, 6-2 ouster of David Flisberg on court No. 2.
Senior Victor Putter won for the second time in his last three outings with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Devon Moskowitz at No. 6 singles, and Barrow accentuated the day for the Orange & Black by toughing out a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Gabelic on court No. 4.
The Bears will stick to the road and make the trek to Johnson City, Tenn., for Tuesday's matchup against ETSU (4-9, 1-0). Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
