MERCER – The Mercer men's tennis team will play the first of two Southern Conference road matches in three days on Sunday when the Bears head to central North Carolina to take on UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Tennis Courts. Start time has been slated for 1 p.m.
Fans unable to make the trip to the Tar Heel State can still follow the match in progress via a live statistics link provided by the UNCG athletics department.
Riding back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Mercer (3-9, 1-0 SoCon) is just less than a week removed from a thrilling triumph over visiting Wofford in its Southern Conference opener. The Bears rallied all the way back from a 3-1 deficit on the team scoreboard to post a 4-3 victory over the Terriers. The final outcome was keyed by a pair of singles wins on Monday morning, including reigning SoCon Player of the Week Marceau Fouilhoux's clutch comeback on court No. 2.
The Bears continue to be led in singles play by sophomore Nemanja Stefanovic who, despite missing the singles portion of Monday's win over Wofford, still boasts a team-best five victories as MU's No. 1 singles player. Senior Samuel Barrow has registered a trio of singles wins on court No. 5 as well.
Doubles play has been a mixed bag of goodness for the Bears as of late. Mercer has captured the doubles point in just three of its 12 outings during the spring, but has now raked in that clutch point twice in its last four contests. MU's No. 2 doubles tandem of Stefanovic and Fouilhoux has logged a 4-6 mark in doubles play so far in 2024, while Samuel Barrow and Samuel MacLeod have logged a trio of doubles wins on court No. 3.
The Spartans (4-11, 0-5) have dropped their last five dual matchups, including a 6-1 setback to visiting Gardner-Webb on Saturday. However, three of UNCG's four team wins this season have come in Greensboro, the latest of which was a 4-3 decision over Fairfield on March 5.
Ukrainian Tymofiy Khrystyuk has split a dozen matchups in singles play this year on court No. 1, as has Swedish-born John Gabelic who has been the mainstay for the Spartans at No. 3 singles in 2024. Fellow Swede David Filsberg has been impressive as well with five singles wins on court No. 2.
UNCG's strength in doubles competition has come on court No. 2 where FIlsberg and Gabelic have registered a 4-2 mark.
