Bears Fall To Drexel At The Atlanta Lacrosse Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss to Drexel in Atlanta, Ga. at Bobby Dodd Stadium for the Atlanta Lacrosse Invitational. The Dragons got up early on the Bears and Mercer was never able to gain the momentum they needed to out-score Drexel, ultimately falling 21-6.

All six Mercer goals were scored by different Bears. Dillon Bush keeps his scoring streak alive after registering a goal in the third quarter. Mikey Frederick posted his fourth goal of the season while Luke Fox added another goal for the Bears. Three freshmen in Will Zylstra, Ganon Cope and Will Schepis each recorded a goal of their own. Quinn Kelley led the defensive side of the field with three groundballs while Nolan Filley caused two turnovers. Between the pipes, goalkeepers Rand Paddack and Jack Guido combined for 16 saves on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dragons offense came out hot right after the first whistle, scoring five goals in the first 10 minutes of play before Michael Frederick responded with a statement goal of his own at the 3:33 mark.
Mercer entered the second quarter with a five point deficit. Ganon Cope did not waste any time trying to get the Bears back in the game, finding the back of the net just 20 seconds into the second quarter. The Dragons responded with 10 straight goals of their own to extend their lead heading into the third quarter.
The Bears began to find some life in the third quarter after back-to-back goals from the firepower duo of Dillon Bush and Will Zylstra at the 6:02 and 5:40 mark, respectively.
Mercer held Drexel to just two goals in the fourth quarter before a Will Schepis goal but the damage had been done and the Bears were not able to catch up to Drexel's electric offense during their time in Bobby Dodd Stadium.

TOP BEARS

Nolan Filley caused two turnovers for the Bears.
The Bear's defense picked up a total of 27 ground balls.
Luke Hand recorded an assist on the afternoon.

NOTABLES

Bush has scored at least one goal in all five games so far this season.
The Dragons head back to Philadelphia with a 3-2 record.

The Bears will travel to St. Bonaventure to face the Bonnies on Thursday, March 6 at noon to open up ASUN conference play.
