Bears Take On Georgia Tech On Tuesday
3/24/2025 2:08:00 PM | Softball
MACON – The Mercer softball team will step back out of Southern Conference play on Tuesday when the Bears head to Atlanta to wrap up a 5-game road trip against Georgia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field.
Fans unable to make the trip to the capital city can still follow the game in progress for free via a live statistics link provided by the Georgia Tech athletics department. The game is also slated to be broadcast live on ACCNX/ESPN+.
The Bears (17-16) pulled out all of their offense to salvage their weekend series at Samford with a 12-5 rout of the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. MU registered eight hits in its most lopsided win over Samford in 37 years, and saw its offensive attack keyed on homers from KiKi Daniels, Grace Jones and Hallie Langford. The Bears also got quality relief from both Grace Roark and Grace Taylor as well.
Although splitting their last 14 games, the Bears have tacked up nearly eight hits (7.9) and more than five runs (5.4) an outing across that span, including five double-digit hit attacks. That span includes five victories over teams currently sporting records above the .500 mark, and three wins against teams currently atop their conference standings.
Reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week Hallie Langford has hit .500 (22-for-44) in her last 13 starts at the top of the batting order to go along with a .561 on base percentage and a team-best 15 runs scored. Senior Tori Hedgecock has toted the hot bat as of late as well as evidenced by a .400 (10-for-25) batting average to go along with three homers and 12 RBI.
The last two weeks have been kind to the Mercer pitching staff as well. Since its seven-game Spring Break march through central Florida, the Bears have registered a 2.83 staff earned run average and have limited opponents to a paltry .225 batting average while striking out 30 and walking 17. Of the 42 hits surrendered by MU across that seven-game span, only 15 have gone for extra bases.

SERIES HISTORY |
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series, 54-17, and will ride a seven-game win streak over the Bears into Tuesday's contest in Atlanta. Mercer's last wins over the Yellow Jackets came amid the 2013 campaign when it swept both ends of a home-and-home series with Georgia Tech. MU led 5-2 after the fifth inning in last season's meeting, but the Ramblin' Wreck scored three runs in the fifth to even up the night, and then walked it off on a 1-out single in the seventh. |
SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH |
Georgia Tech (7-3) has won seven of its last 10 contests, including the last two games of its Atlantic Coast Conference road series at Pitt over the weekend. The Yellow Jackets fell on the wrong end of a 6-0 decision in the series opener with the Panthers, but notched 19 hits over the last two games of the set to prevail, 7-6 and 9-0. Georgia Tech will tote one of the country's top home run-hitting squads into Tuesday's contest. Tech has registered 2.0 home runs per game this season, including seven multi-homer contests. Sophomore infielder Gracyn Tucker has already logged nine home runs and 32 RBI this season, but freshman outfielder Alyssa Willer has compiled a team-best .426 batting average to go along with four homers, 20 RBI and 20 runs scored. Senior Sophia Voyles (7-4, 2.24 ERA) has registered team-bests in both appearances (16) and innings pitched (65.2) for the Ramblin' Wreck this season, while also striking out 78 batters and limiting opponents to a .203 batting average. Georgia Tech ranks 5th, nationally, with 9.2 strikeouts per seven innings and has already posted four shutouts. |
UP NEXT FOR THE BEARS |
Mercer will return home on Saturday and Sunday to host a key Southern Conference series against Chattanooga (21-9, 2-1 SoCon) at Sikes Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon doubleheader and close out the set with a single dip on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all three games is free. |
