MACON – Home-standing Mercer yielded just six games in sweeping through a trio of doubles matchups, and then tacked up six singles victories in straight sets, to register its first win of the traditional spring campaign with a 7-0 shutout of ABAC on Monday afternoon at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center.
The triumph snapped a five-match skid for the Bears (1-5) who were successful on the first leg of a three-match home stand at the sprawling athletic complex in south Macon. The Golden Stallions fell to 0-7 all-time in the 6-year-old series with the Orange & Black.
Mercer needed just less than 30 minutes to haul in the doubles point as Amen Prince Gandonou/Shingo Masuda made quick work of their ABAC opponents on Court No. 3, while Hod'Abalo Isak Padio/Nemanja Stefanovic followed suit a couple of minutes later with a 6-3 triumph over Luka Blache/Jules Zanarelli in the featured doubles contest. The latter gave MU a 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard, but Alex Aldaz and Macon native Cameron Douthit finished off the doubles sweep two minutes later when they ousted Benjamin Ranby-Al and Milan Volbert at No. 2 doubles.
The Bears continued their roll in singles matchup with a trio of straight-sets victories in 63 minutes or less. Masuda cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court No. 5, while Aldaz registered a similar 6-0, 6-1 triumph on the adjacent court. Padio trailed 1-0 in his opening set with Cruz Yanez, but still coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the featured singles bout.
Stefanovic won a 6-0, 6-3 contest over Jules Zanarelli at No. 2 singles, while Howell Burns pushed the team score out to 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win on Court No. 6. Gandonou finished off a perfect day for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-3 win on Court No. 5 over Luis Alejandro Pereyra.
Mercer will continue its three-match home stay on Wednesday when it suits up to take on instate foe Young Harris (1-2) in the back half of a 10:30 a.m. women's and men's doubleheader against the Mountain Lions at the Copelan Tennis Complex. Admission to all 2026 Mercer tennis home matches is free.
