Mercer suffers 12-3 defeat to nationally ranked Bulldogs
Â
Mercer (11-12) remained within striking distance of the nationally ranked Bulldogs (20-3) until its intrastate SEC foe plated four runs apiece in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Quirisa Mauga scored Meghan Rud from third base with a RBI-single after Rud opened the frame with a single and a stolen base. Georgia would reclaim its lead with three runs in the fifth, only to see it cut back to a one-run game thanks to the bat of Maxine Rodriguez, who singled home Rud and Taylor Miller after their consecutive hits.
Â
Rodriguez took the loss in the circle despite limiting the high-powered Georgia offense (7.39 runs per game entering Friday) to only four runs through five innings.
Â
The Bears will look to rebound against Delaware State (1-10) this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the UCF Softball Complex.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Meghan Rud was her dynamic self atop the Mercer lineup, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. It was her team-best ninth multi-hit game of the season as she pushed her season batting average to .407.
