Junior pitcher tosses three-hitter for her fifth win
ORLANDO, Fla. – Megan Bilgri tossed a three-hit complete game as Mercer jumped ahead early to defeat Delaware State, 4-1, in its second game at the UCF Wilson/DeMarini Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Â
Despite allowing a leadoff triple that led to Delaware State's lone run in the top of the first inning, Bilgri dominated the opposition and relied on a solid defensive performance from the Bears (12-12) en route to the win. The right-hander improved to 5-1 for Mercer.
Â
Mercer plated three runs in the bottom of the first, triggered largely by the speed of Meghan Rud and Taylor Miller, who led off the frame with a single and stolen base apiece. A fielding error, sacrifice fly by Abby Walsh and RBI-single by Caroline Taylor in consecutive at bats led to the Bears' three runs.
Â
Miller added a RBI-single in the second inning to score Shaila Warren and make it 4-1.
Â
The Bears return to action Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against host UCF in their third game of the Wilson/DeMarini Tournament.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Bilgri stole the show with a smooth performance in the circle, needing only 63 pitches to mow down the Delaware State lineup over seven innings. Despite failing to strikeout a single batter, Bilgri also did not allow a walk and registered her lowest hit total in a complete game this season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer stole five bases as a team, pushing its season total to 60 in 66 attempts. The Bears also held Delaware State to zero steals.
