The Bears limited to two hits against the host Knights
ORLANDO, Fla. – A RBI-triple in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the deciding factor in Mercer's 3-2 loss to host UCF on the second day of the UCF Wilson/DeMarini Tournament at the Knights' Softball Complex Saturday evening.
Â
The Knights' Tamesha Glover led off the frame with a single and stolen base and scored the game-winning run on a RBI-triple by Willow Kalinen. Stella Preston took the loss for Mercer (12-13) despite going the distance.
Â
Both of Mercer's runs were unearned, keyed by three UCF errors committed in the third and sixth innings. Catie Josselet reached on a throwing error in the third and advanced to second base before scoring on a single by Meghan Rud to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead. Mercer would later tie the contest, 2-2, when Taylor Miller stole second base to force a throwing error by the UCF catcher, allowing Rud to score from third base.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Preston took the loss but submitted a solid performance for the Bears in the circle. She was able to scatter five hits over six innings of work while striking out four batters, but could not avoid the big hit in key moments. Preston also induced 11 fly outs.
