Self-inflicted mistakes hurt Bears in 8-4 loss
Â
Mercer (11-11) finished 2-3 overall at the Citrus Classic, completing its first of two consecutive weekends playing in Orlando. Boston College improved to 12-9 on the season.
Â
Mercer got on the board in the top of the second inning with two runs on four hits. After Quirisa Mauga and Abby Walsh reached on singles and Maxine Rodriguez moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, Caroline Taylor came through with a RBI-single. Pinch-runner Shaila Warren stole home on a double steal to add the second run and tie the game, 2-2.
Â
Two more Mercer runs came in the seventh on a RBI-single by Walsh and bases-loaded walk by Rodriguez, but the Eagles had already claimed a six-run advantage at that point.
Â
Megan Bilgri (4-1) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run in four innings of relief. Jill McElderry, who started in the circle, went two innings and scattered three hits while earning the no-decision.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Walsh improved her season average to .294 with a 2-for-4 performance against the Eagles. It was her second multi-hit performance of the season and the weekend. The freshman added her 18th RBI, ranking second on the team.
