Bears Drop 12-9 Contest at Mount St. Mary’s Saturday

EMMITSBURG, MD. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team battled hard but fell 12-9 at the hands of Mount St. Mary's Saturday morning at the Waldron Family Stadium.
How It Happened
The two squads flexed their defensive strengths early in the first quarter. It wasn't until 7:14 remaining in the first, when Mercer's Michael Quinn was able to beat the Mount's keeper, to take a 1-0 lead. Mount St. Mary's knotted it up at one apiece as Rich Holle found the back of the net. The teams entered the first break tied at 1-1.
The Bears took the lead once again as Bryan Gibson scored just 2:31 into the second period, assisted by Pascal Coombs. Momentum would switch yet again, with Mount St. Mary's scoring two straight for a 3-2 lead. Gibson netted his second goal of the afternoon, assisted by Scott Baird, with 3:26 remaining in the half. The Mount added another before Baird capitalized on an extra man opportunity, scoring with 1:42 left in the period. The teams would enter the halftime break tied at 4-4.
Both squads would strike quick in the second half, with the Mount scoring in the first 16 seconds and Pascal Coombs less than thirty seconds later. Mount St. Mary's stretched to the largest lead of the game as they scored four unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes of play. The Bears' Gibson completed his hat trick in the 13th minute of the third, cutting the Mount's lead to 9-6.
Mercer's Coombs would open the fourth quarter with back to back goals for a hat trick of his own. The Mount would string together another three goals to extend their lead to 12-8 with 1:37 remaining in the contest. The Bears' Patrick Marks netted one with just over a minute left, but Mercer fell short, dropping a 12-9 decision to Mount St. Mary's.
With the loss, Mercer falls to 2-5, while Mount St. Mary's improves to 3-4.
