Bears hit eight-run inning
Macon, Ga. – On the first day of the Mercer Bears Classic, Mercer defeats Iona in a thrilling six-inning game.Â
Mercer 9, Iona 1
The first hit of the game would be by Iona in the top of the third with a single by Haley Weaver. The Gaels would not capitalize on Weaver stealing second before the Bears will take over at bat.

The first hit of the game for Mercer would be in the bottom of the fourth. Adele Braun and Grace Prom both hit doubles with the double from Prom scoring Braun. In the same inning Kylie Helm would walk, the fifth Bear to do so along with Kenlie Harvey, Tori Ash, Prom, and Rebeca Laudino.Â

In the bottom of the fifth, Alyssa Woods and Tori Hedgecock would join the group of Bears to earn a walk.Â

The Gales would tie the game in the top of the sixth. Jessica Chilcott would reach base on an error by left field. Another error by right field reached Natalia Meray and scored Chilcott. Mercer 1, Iona 1Â

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears responded in a huge way. As the lead off, the walking streak continued with Braun. A single from Ash advanced Braun followed by a single from Annie Potter advanced Ash to third and scored Braun. Amy McNab walked, advancing Potter to second with a single by Laudino advancing McNab scoring Potter and Ash. Another walk by Harvey would load the bases and a walk by Baker extended the lead to four. Mercer five, Iona one. With two outs, Braun singled to left field scoring Laudino, leaving the bases loaded. A hit by the pitcher on Prom scored Harvey, 7-1. A single to left field by Ash closed out the game scoring Braun and Baker. In total, the bottom of the sixth included eight runs and five hits.Â

In the circle, Katie Rearley recorded the best game of her season so far with six total strikeouts with only one hit.Â

The Bears continue as hosts of the classic with a 3:00 p.m. rematch against Iona and a 5:00 p.m. game versus Stetson.Â
